And of
course, here a short introduction of team BHOE’s very first project, Moképon!
Moképon is, as the title suggests, based on the
popular gameseries Pokémon. The versions we’ve focused on while implementing
the basis of our game are Pokémon Red and Blue, the very first games in the
Pokémon series to come out outside of Japan. It came out in 1998 as a remake of
the original (Japanese) Pokémon games (Red and Green, but later on also a
Blue)which came out in 1996, but differed very little from those apart for some
different sprites and a lot of bug fixes. The games (all of them, Japanese and
American/European) were/are playable on the Nintendo GameBoy (and are of course
property of Nintendo).
The travelling and general walking around is shown using a top-down
approach. You walk over a (invisible) grid and battle trainers if you cross
eyes with them. It is also possible to battle wild Pokémon by walking in
certain areas (mostly tall grass or caves), this is done using a random
encounter system; you never know when you will meet a Pokémon in places such as
this.

Our version of this very popular idea is slightly
different. Because of several different things (mostly time issues) we’ve
decided to take out the exploring and wandering, making our game purely
battle-oriented. This makes meeting wild Pokémon (or “Moképon”, as our
creatures are called) nearly impossible. Our solution? A money-based game,
where you get 6 random Moképon upon starting a save file, with whom you should
try to defeat a trainer somewhere, earn money, enhance the stats of your team
or buy better Moképon and fight again. This cycle continues until you’ve found
your perfect team, beaten all six leaders and have become the Moképon Master!
Another very drastic change is the implementation of
“modern technology”, namely a Wiimote. Because of this, Moképon gives of an
entirely different atmosphere as Pokémon, as you are now no longer a bystander
screaming orders to your Pokémon, no, you’re actually participating in the
battle! If you don’t show the correct sign, your Moképon will not execute the
correct move and you won’t win. Simple as that.
With more than 20 different trainers to encounter, 50
different Moképon (which includes evolutions, some of which area-specific), 100
different moves (and thus signs), six different areas and, last but not least,
6 very strong leaders to challenge, Moképon is set to give you at least a whole
afternoon of fun, but is also very fit for leisurely playing and beating a few
trainers in a couple of minutes.
We hope you’ll enjoy!
